Want to start a community garden? Here are 5 tips

Posted by Tristan Cottrell under Home Improvement World

1. Form a planning committee (six to 12 people is ideal) and decide what exactly you want to do. Do you want the garden to have individual plots? Who will be invited to join? Will children be welcome? What will you do with the produce: Keep it, donate it or sell it?

2. Assign a garden coordinator.

3. Find land that gets six to eight hours of sun each day and has access to water. The land owner and the garden planners need to agree that the land will be available for at least three years; Schneider recommends a written contract.

4. Write the gardens rules. Think about such issues as security and liability. How will you handle costs for such things as installing a watering system and buying seeds and fertilizer?

5. Youre ready to start laying out the garden, rototilling and staking out plots.
