Back in the glory days, my office was equally engaged in master land planning and master landscape planning. The former involves laying out the roads, buildings and amenities that a new community needs, including lake locations, bridges, entry features, and the like.

The work involves assisting the developer in creating a community that not only yields the needed number of units, but also accounts for creative road alignments and the best possible set-asides for preserve areas. If you live in a gated community, and you’ve noticed long lake views strategically placed along your spine road, then you have experienced great master planning.

Corban and his wife, Carla, already owned and lived in the boathouse, but the arrival of their daughter, Caroline, created the need for something grander. Still, the couple wanted to retain much of the boathouse’s original spirit and charm, including the home’s old growth cypress construction materials. When the building project began in 2005, Corban asked the contractor to take apart the old boathouse by hand so the cypress could be used to accent the new home.

“These trees were ancient,” Corban said. “We thought it would be a shame not to reuse it.”

Now, Corban’s high home finds itself among some lofty company.
